What is it?

Intolerance to some food components leads to digestive disorders and changes in the absorption of individual nutrients.

In our clinic, we offer tests for lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBO). It includes an initial interview with a doctor who will determine what type of intolerance it may be and recommend a specific test. The test is painless. The measurement is performed from exhaled air. Since June 1, 2026, we have been performing measurements with the GastroCHECK device, which simultaneously analyzes exhaled hydrogen and methane. This test shows higher sensitivity than the analysis of exhaled hydrogen alone. The price of this test is CZK 2,000 (includes a disposable mouthpiece, analysis of both gases, evaluation of the result by a doctor).

When should I get tested?

When I suffer from bloating, have abdominal pain after eating, flatulence, nausea, bowel movement disorders.

What will the examination tell us?

Whether it is

• lactose intolerance – the enzyme lactase, which is in the small intestine, is missing or non-functional. The body is unable to break down lactose, which is found in milk and dairy products.
• fructose malabsorption – most commonly an acquired disorder of fructose (fruit sugar) absorption in the small intestine. The reason may be inflammation or excessive intake of fructose in the diet.
• overgrowth of mainly anaerobic bacteria in the small intestine – leads to damage to the intestinal mucosa, disorders of digestion and absorption of some food components

What is the treatment?

The only treatment is dietary measures:
for lactose intolerance – dairy-free diet or lactose-free foods
for fructose malabsorption – foods low in fructose
for SIBO – diet low in sugar residues, antibiotic treatment is at the doctor's discretion
